15. What is the difference between bonded and real leather?

Bonded leather takes waste leather and reconstitutes it with a small amount of PU to give a leather like finish.

Real leather is taken form the hide and split to the appropriate thickness. There are many grades of real leather and price varies dependent on the grade.

16. What is the difference between different leathers?

Full grain (Richmond, Sandringham, Chelsea leathers) - Full-grain refers to hides that have not been sanded and buffed to remove imperfections (or natural marks) on the surface of the hide. The grain remains, allowing the fibre strength and durability. The grain also has breathability, resulting in less moisture from prolonged contact. Rather than wearing out, it will develop a patina over time. However, there will be natural imperfections and variations throughout the leather that make every item unique.

Split leather Corrected Grain (Ascot & Hampton Leather)- During the splitting operation, the top grain and drop split are separated. Split leather then has an artificial layer applied to the surface of the split and is embossed with a leather grain. Splits are also used to create suede. Split leather usually has a good emboss quality and is durable and soft.

Bonded leather (balmoral Leather) - Not a true leather but a man-made material composed of leather fibres (often scrap from leather tanneries or leather workshops) bonded together to create a look at a fraction of the cost. Bonded or leather board has the advantage of being produced on a roll in sheets, so waste is minimised.

  • Although bonded leather uses some recycled leather components, its method of production and the high use of solvent and adhesives, means that it is not an environmentally friendly option.
  • Bonded leather cannot be sold as genuine leather as its structure has been changed from the original hide. It must be described as bonded leather or bonded leather fibre, otherwise it will be in breach of Trading Standards.

E leather - A bonded leather made in the UK from tannery waste which would usually go to landfill. This is bonded using water pressure making it both recycled and environmentally friendly. However, whereas traditional bonded leather is at the budget end of the leather spectrum, E leather is mid-range in price. It is produced on a roll so minimises waste seen with real leather.
